NGV TEMPORARY CLOSURE

From our team here at NGV, we’d like to express our very best wishes to our community at this time.

Due to the evolving nature of COVID-19 and after following closely the State and Federal Government’s advice, we have extended the NGV’s temporary closure until 30 June.

If you have pre-purchased tickets for current exhibitions or upcoming programs, our team will be in contact with you shortly to arrange full refunds.

We encourage you to visit our website and follow #NGVEveryDay on social media for updates and daily inspiration.

We are very grateful for the loyalty and understanding of the NGV community and wish everyone well during this time.

The construction of the Main Outfall Sewer in the 1890s played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of Melburnians. Until this time “Smellbourne” was a city of stagnant drains and cesspits. The Main Outfall Sewer was designed to respond to Melbourne’s geography, climate and lifestyle and its construction had a significant impact on the city’s liveability. After 120 years, the decommissioned sewer is once again shaping the lives of Melburnians by responding to new public health challenges including obesity, heart disease, the urban heat effect and social isolation, along with mitigating the threats of climate change.

This 60-minute tour will explore the history of the site and discuss how redesigning the sewer is helping to improve the lives of a new generation of Melburnians.

Please note:
Not wheelchair accessible. Park bus will depart near the end of Lukis avenue.
