EXHIBITION TIMES: 12–22 MAR, 10AM–5PM DAILY
This exhibition of Japanese art and design from the early twentieth century reflects a time of vibrant consumer culture and creativity as the nation opened itself up to cultural and technological influences from abroad. Examples of fashion design, graphic design, publications, handcrafted glassware and lacquerware accompany large-scale paintings and prints by leading avant-garde designers and illustrators of the era to reveal a fascinating moment of transformation in traditional Japanese art and aesthetics.
This exhibition is the result of a focused collecting strategy to build the NGV’s holdings of visually inspiring art and design from this fascinating and little recognised era of Asian art.
Please Note: this exhibition runs until October 4th 2020.
